Harry Payton ‘not at all satisfied’ with Ezekiel’s story of The Walking Dead

Warning: This story contains spoilers for Sunday’s “Outpost 22” episode of The Walking Dead. “However, I am smiling.” This is the motto of the usually optimistic King Ezekiel (Khary Payton), who has faced a difficult trial since his days as king of the kingdom. As the father figure to Benjamin (Logan Miller), Ezekiel suffered a loss when the young knight died under the Saviors’ oppression. Then the beloved pet tiger Shiva met her noble end fighting a group of walkers. His adopted son Henry (Matt Lintz) died in a massacre perpetrated by Alpha (Samantha Morton) of Whispers, shutting down the kingdom, and Ezekiel diagnosed with cancer.

Yet he is smiling. Ezekiel found his second chance in the Commonwealth, receiving treatment for thyroid cancer from surgeon Tommy (Ian Anthony Dale) and establishing a secret clinic to provide care for the sick and poor in the community.

But then Eugene (Josh McDermitt) causes the accidental death of Sebastian Melton (Theo Rab Olson), causing Governor Pamela Melton (Lily Robbins) to disappear from Eugene’s friends from the Commonwealth, causing Ezekiel to be exiled as a labor camp worker at his side. The one he hates the most: Former lifeguard leader Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan).

It’s a journey that has given Payton little reason to smile.

Actor King Ezekiel said from the inside When asked if he was “satisfied” with his character’s journey during the last episodes. “But that’s one of the things that happens when you have a show that has a lot of dynamic and interesting characters. 48 minutes, or sometimes, an hour long episode isn’t enough.”

Payton added, “These characters are so beautifully constructed. I think the strength of the show is that these characters are so subtle and interesting, and there are so many of them that you can’t fathom it all. I’m so sorry to say goodbye to Ezekiel as I cross my fingers and hope that maybe sometime Somewhere down the road, we can tell the story of how Ezekiel became king or something.”

“Yes, there is a chance. AMC+, there is a place to land there,” Payton said of his potential future as Ezekiel. “If something like that happened, I’d be excited to explore it. We’ll just have to wait and see.”

In response to the interlocutor’s hope, Ezekiel is alive the walking DeadPayton replied, “I do too. I do, because maybe it means there’s a chance that I can play not just flashbacks, but before and after. I keep my fingers crossed because I’d love to play Ezekiel again one day.”
